Buganda Kingdom has reiterated its appeal to the government to lower taxes on vocational institutions, arguing that easing the financial burden on training centres will promote skills development, innovation, and job creation among Uganda’s youth.

The Kingdom of Buganda has once again appealed to the Central Government to consider reducing taxes imposed on vocational institutions as a way of supporting skills development and job creation among the youth.

The appeal was made by the Minister for Lukiiko, Information, Cabinet Affairs, Protocol and the Official Kingdom Spokesperson, Noah Kiyimba, while officiating at an exhibition of crafts and practical innovations organized by students of Buganda Royal Institute (BRI) at Mmengo–Kakeeka.

He also advised that instead of seeking to exhibit abroad, the Institute should establish a dedicated exhibition and production centre near the campus, where students can continuously showcase their skills and sell their creations.

Kiyimba further urged students to remain humble and committed to lifelong learning, reminding them that acquiring a skill should mark the beginning of professional growth, not its end.

“You must continue researching and expanding your knowledge so that you become valuable contributors to the nation,” he said.

He appealed to the government to provide more support to vocational and technical institutions by reducing taxes on equipment and materials used in training, saying such a move would ease operations, lower costs, and attract more young people to take up vocational studies.

In his remarks, the Principal of Buganda Royal Institute, Joseph Balikuddembe Ssenkusu, highlighted that the institution, which has served the country for over 26 years, has not only focused on academic excellence but has also produced skilled graduates who have gone on to create their own employment and contribute to national development.

He echoed the minister’s call, urging the government to prioritize initiatives that uplift citizens from poverty, especially those rooted in practical skills development.

Balikuddembe also reminded students to uphold good discipline and strong moral values in their work, noting that “no employer or customer will work with someone of poor character.”

The Head of the Art and Design Department, Zawedde Monica, applauded the resilience and hard work of the students, saying the successful exhibition was the result of months of dedication.

She emphasized that through art and design, students not only learn but also develop practical skills in creativity, entrepreneurship, design, and presentation—skills that can help them earn an income in the future.

The event was attended by the Presidential Representative for Kalungu District, Self Katabaazi, who is also an alumnus of Buganda Royal Institute, alongside parents, institutional leaders, and students.

The exhibition demonstrated Buganda Royal Institute’s continued commitment to skills development, innovation, and youth empowerment, aligning with the Kingdom’s vision of creating a self-reliant and productive population.
